BREAST SURGERIES

The reason for having a larger than usual areola may be congenital or due to stretching of the breast tissues, either due to significant weight gain, after motherhood or lactation, or due to having very lax skin. We refer to hypertrophic or prominent areolas when their development is very large in relation to the breast.

prominent areola

Although they occupy a small area of the total chest area, the areolas and nipples are critical to the function and shape of the breast. Some swollen areolas can make us feel ashamed for our body to the point of avoiding intimate situations.

They are recognized because if we observe the breasts in a relaxed state, the prominent areolas give the sensation of being swollen. Also, there may be cases of  tubular breasts  and prominent areolas. Although it is more typical in women, it sometimes develops in men who practice weightlifting, or perform intense physical or professional activities in which they have to lift heavy weights.

Through plastic surgery, the correction of nipple-areola complex problems can achieve a high level of satisfaction. It is common for this areola reduction operation to be performed taking advantage of another major breast surgery (mastopexy or breast lift;  reduction mammoplasty or breast reduction), although only the surgical procedure to reduce the diameter of the areola can be performed. Procedures to correct areolas are similar to those used for nipple abnormalities.

Through an incision at the base of the nipple or in the areola itself, the pigmented tissue that the plastic surgeon has previously assessed is removed. The resulting scar is minimal, being hidden below the areola, obtaining satisfactory, immediate and permanent results with this surgery. In the postoperative period it is highly recommended to sunbathe; Thus, the small scar will be pigmented and will acquire the same color tone as the rest of the areola.

After surgery we achieve an aesthetically more harmonious areola with the shape and size of the breast. In some cases, in addition, this remodeling of the areola can raise the breast -if the patient so wishes-, depending on the amount of skin that is removed.

There are different areola reconstruction options, which our plastic surgeons will explain to you in your first diagnostic consultation. After evaluating your general condition, they will inform you of the most appropriate and appropriate options for your state of health, your age, your anatomy and your expectations for the future.
